Are You A… Brazilian Wax Virgin?

If you associate words like “unbearable pain” and “completely embarrassing” with waxing, then you must be a wax virgin!
It’s really not as bad as you think. More often than not, wax virgins are afraid simply because waxing as a form of hair removal is something so foreign to them; something so unknown, even a little taboo. And naturally, as human beings, we fear the unknown.
So what better way to conquer your fear of the unknown than to be in the know? Let’s delve into the art of waxing and answer those questions you might be too afraid to ask out loud.
What exactly is waxing and what is it all about?
Waxing is a safe and effective method of non-permanent hair removal that eliminates hair by targeting the root.
How it works: a thin layer of hot wax is first spread over an area of the skin; then a thin piece of cloth is pressed down on top of that thin layer of wax, and ripped off swiftly against the direction of hair growth.
Virtually any area of the body can be waxed – eyebrows, legs, feet, etc. However, the area that gets the most attention when it comes to waxing is arguably the bikini area, or in other words, “places where the sun don’t shine”. Ladies can get it done (it’s called the “Brazilian”), and so can men (aptly named “Boyzilian”).
It’s usually “all off” (complete hair removal from the pubic region, starting from the top to the back – yes – the butt) when you do a Brazilian or a Boyzilian. But if you can’t bear to go that bare just yet, feel free to let your therapist know – they would be more than happy to meet with your requests… with the creative use of patterns!

A “landing strip” pattern is a popular choice with those who are uncomfortable with being 100% hair-free down there. It’s also a pretty classic ‘do. |

For a safe choice, you may want to request for a triangle, which is basically a neater ‘do of au naturale hair |

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, you can always opt for the heart-shaped pattern – too cute! |
Why should I choose waxing when I have a shaver, something much less intimidating?
Because waxing targets hair removal right from the root, you won’t see the same amount of hair you had pre-wax in two, three, even four weeks, unlike shaving. Growth is much slower and believe it or not, hair actually grows back noticeably finer and lighter. If you’ve always had a problem with thick hair, especially down there, you can say goodbye to your Amazonian rainforest!
Wait a minute – why should I wax in the first place? I don’t see the need for it!
Let’s bring in hygiene for starters. Hair is all around the pubic region, and you have to admit that it does get in the way in terms of cleanliness, especially when you’re having your period!

Want that little bit of a confidence booster? You’d be surprised what a simple Brazilian Wax can do for you. You’re guaranteed to feel the difference when you’re walking down the street the next day – you’ve got to try it to believe it!
Additionally, in all honesty, men and women both get their privates waxed because of *ahem*, naughtier pursuits. It’s that feeling of sensuality that’s attributed to being so bare, and some partners and couples do prefer it that way. For men, there’s the added bonus of creating that “optical inch”, or to put it bluntly, “getting rid of the bush to make the tree look taller”!
In modern times like these, waxing of the private area is just as important as shaving your underarms or threading your eyebrows. It’s all about being well-groomed. Long gone are the days of excessive hair everywhere. Come on, it’s 2012 now, not 1962!
Does waxing hurt? How intense is the “Ouch Factor”?
I won’t lie – there will be some discomfort and it will be slightly intensified for wax virgins because your skin isn’t used to such treatment.
However, it’s not the kind of discomfort that will make you wail or scream, as Hollywood flicks love to over-dramatise. Also, it’s not a painful process every step of the way; some areas are more sensitive than others.
Here’s an example: for a Brazilian Wax, the nerves in the top region of the pubic area are more receptive to pain, as compared to say, the butt area – which most people feel absolutely no discomfort at all.

Yikes! Do I have to be completely naked in front of a stranger? What would they think?
You don’t have to strip from head to toe when you get a wax. Only the area of which hair is being removed needs to be exposed.
In the case of a Brazilian or a Boyzilian, you are only required to take off the bottom half of your attire. There will usually be a towel for you to use while laying there for your therapist so you feel more secure that way, especially if you’re particularly shy about your first time.
Another fear that must be addressed is the embarrassment, or rather, the self-conscious factor which prevents many from getting waxed in the first place.
Don’t worry about your therapist seeing how you look down there. If you’re practically convinced you look weird or that different from others, just know that this is just another job to the people at the waxing parlour. They’ve seen the private parts of thousands and thousands of men and women. In fact, ask any therapist how they feel about such a job, and if they’ve come across anything close to weird biologically and/or aesthetically, chances are, they’ll tell you “No, after a while, they all look the same! It really is just another job.”
Now that we’ve cleared all that up, waxing doesn’t seem to be that much of a hair-raising issue now, does it?
If you’ve half-made up your mind, but still have more questions, you’d be better off understanding what happens during a wax and other important aspects of the art of waxing.
