7 Ways to Boost Your Metabolism

We’ve all read countless articles on balanced diets, ways to lose weight fast and staying healthy. But the tricky part is really metabolism. How exactly can we boost it to maximise results? Here are some tips:

  • Build more muscle mass

Muscle burns more calories than fats. Thus, the more muscle mass you build, the more calories you burn. To increase muscle mass, carry out weight-bearing exercises for at least 2–3 times a week. Weight lifting and walking will do. You can also try doing less “obvious” exercises to avoid the mundane. For example, try weight lifting while watching your favourite TV show.

  • Don’t skip meals

Skipping meals may help you shed a few pounds, but it’s bad for your metabolism in the long run. In fact, decreasing your calorie intake will actually slow down your metabolism. It is advisable to consume enough calories, about 100 calories, by eating three times a day.

  • Regular exercise

You can boost your metabolism by exercising regularly. Cycle, walk, jog, take the stairs, even plain housecleaning is enough to increase your metabolic rate.

  • Enough sleep

Getting enough sleep will help boost metabolism. Lack of sleep may affect the appetite hormones as well as the capacity of your body to metabolise carbohydrates. If you don’t get enough sleep, you also risk suffering from low energy levels. You will be too tired to exercise and the tendency to eat unhealthy food is much higher.

  • Enough protein

This is connected to the muscle mass you must build since protein serves as the building blocks for muscles. Lack of protein may result in loss of other desirable muscle mass.

  • Less alcohol

Alcohol can slow down the process of burning fats – the body will burn off the calories from the alcohol first before burning off the fats which you are trying to lose. Therefore, you should really cut down on the alcohol. Not only will you body thank you, but your wallet will too!
