Ding! Ding! Ding! Last Call for Pet Boarding

Features, LOVE88, Pets — By 88DB Editor on December 29, 2010 3:25 pm

Few, if any bring their pets on their travels. So, if you are planning on doing so during this festive holidays, use this checklist to find out the things to take note of for boarding your pet or having a pet sitter over

Not all of us have the luxury of counting on someone to take care of our beloved pets while we take a long-deserved trip for the holidays. For those of us who need to send our pets to a boarding facility or find a pet sitter, what are some of the things to take note of?

Decide on the type of pet care you want for your pet. The three main types are Pet Kennels, Pet Sitting and Drop-Ins. Pet Kennels.

  • Pet Kennels are the most traditional and also most common way of making sure that a pet is cared for while its owners are away.
  • Pet Sitting is another option that has become increasingly popular, especially with cats that are often happier in its own home.
  • Last but not least are Drop-Ins, where twice daily drop-ins are sufficient for pets that do not require too much attention.

For Boarding Kennels

Research on the kennels; get recommendations from friends or vet, and request for a tour of the facility if possible. You might want to find out about feeding, playtime, walks, procedures and other burning questions you may have

For Pet Sitting

Once again, research through forums or the organizations’ website for information and feel free to shoot questions through their enquiry lines. Ask for testimonials and even ask to meet the pet sitter in person if you were to engage their services, for sometimes, only upon the actual meeting, will you actually know how comfortable you feel about your pet in the care of the sitter

For Drop-Ins

For pets such as fishes, you may consider the option of having drop-in visits for your pets. You may consider having a friend whom you trust to drop by once or twice daily to feed and check on your pet. Or it could be a neighbour that you are familiar with.

  1. After you have decided on the type of pet care, its always wise to book well in advance, particularly when nearing the long holiday such as Lunar New Year
  2. Make sure that your pet is current on its vaccinations. Also, many boarding facilities require certificate from the Veterinarian declaring that the pet is free from contagious diseases. If in doubt about the procedures, do check with the boarding facility for more rules that they may have
  3. Measure and pack your pet’s food to comfort the pet and prevent diarrhoea and vomiting that may happen to pets who try different brands of food during their stay at the temporary facility
  4. If your pet is on any form of medication, do also pack them with the directions on how and when the pet usually receives its medicine
  5. If this is the first time that you are letting your pet out of your sight for days, it may be comforting for them to have familiar items that remind them of home such as its pet bed or blanket
  6. Always provide the emergency contact numbers of relatives or friends who are contactable locally so that they may make any decisions on your behalf in the event of an emergency. In addition, unless you are trekking in the jungles or mountain climbing, it would be wise to provide the number of your hotel or resort too.

Remember that taking the time to choose the right holiday pet care and planning for your pet’s holiday stay is one of the best holiday gifts you can give to your pets, so put at least half as much thought into it as you do for your own travel plans.
