Fengshui & You

Events, Events & Activities, Home Services — By 88DB Knowledge on January 6, 2012 12:46 pm

88DB Lifestyle had the honour of meeting the internationally renowned Master Yun Long-zi, founder of the Lotus On Water Fengshui Gallery and 6th generation Fengshui Master. With the Lunar New Year fast approaching, we took the opportunity to clear up some questions our readers put to us about the ancient art of Fengshui.

What is Fengshui REALLY about?

Fundamental Beliefs

Fengshui originated in China and is based upon a philosophy of the movement of ‘Qi’ or natural energy through our environments. The movement of this natural energy is predicated by 3 elements of heavenly time, the environment and the human factor, as well as the concept of Yin and Yang.

When Yin and Yang are aligned by adjusting the 3 elements, ‘Qi’ will flow, resulting in a more harmonious environment.

Acupuncture has recently become more accepted in society. In acupuncture, there are many points in the human body that will affect the other parts. Fengshui is similar to acupuncture in this aspect. There are many points that the layman cannot see. It is the job of a fengshui master to find and align these points in order for the Yin and Yang to move in the way we want them to move.

Your environment affects how you feel and how you think. It influences your quality of life on a daily basis. Your health, prosperity and relationships are all under its influence. Not all places make you feel the same.

Religion and Fengshui

Religion is not part of fengshui, rather it is based on human beliefs. Fengshui is essentially a technique for aligning the energy of a space.

The use of deities such as Buddha images, crosses and other icons act as a reminder of our belief and faith. Even with this knowledge, some people are still uncomfortable with the mixing of religion and spirituality with fengshui.

However, following compass directions (Magnetic North and South) is about as spiritual as fengshui gets.

Instruments of a Fengshui Master

While the compass is the most basic instrument of a fengshui master, the eyes can be considered the most important. The compass allows us to determine the direction of Magnetic North and South, but the eyes allow us to see the Yin and Yang points.

Arranging Furniture?

Similar to acupuncture, adjustments in certain areas will have certain results. Heavenly bodies like the moon, affect us in the same way the moon affects the tides. The way ‘Qi’ moves is affected by these heavenly bodies as well. The trees, the stars and the mountains all have an impact on us.

Depending on how effective the items are, the arrangement of furniture or ornaments can affect us. Even the placement of a fish tank in the wrong place can affect your well-being.

Normally, during a consultation, I will tell my clients what has been happening to the inhabitants. Once, during a consultation, I saw a fish tank in the living room. I asked my client how long the fish tank has been placed there and he told me that it had been 3 or 4 months. I then asked if there had been any accidents or if his wealth has suffered. He stood up and told me that since the fish tank had been placed there, he had a horrible accident and he was on MC for 3 months!

If you can imagine, even a small item like a fish tank can cause bad fortune, then yes, the placement of ornaments and furniture can affect us.

The Effect of Our Environment

What we hear with our ears and see with our eyes can affect us. If the people around you tell you positive things, you will naturally feel positive. However, if the people around you tell you negative things, you will naturally feel negative as well.

Our perception of the universe and what we allow into our minds has a definite affect on us. Some of the items we use in fengshui are carvings of certain animals. These shapes have accumulated cultural and societal implications.

There are many stones and woods that we use in our carvings. We believe that these materials have a certain power. Jade for example, is traditionally worn by Chinese emperors as it is one of the most tenacious stones in the world. The lion is a symbol of power. When a jade carving of a lion is worn, it symbolizes power. Also, when pronounced in Chinese, the word lion or ‘shi’ also sounds like the Chinese word for teacher. So, when you wear a jade lion, you will have powerful clients.
