How to Keep your Place Clean Daily

So it’s happened again. You got busy with work and everyday you’re back late, you just want to do nothing but laze about. The result – you’ve let your place go (almost) to pieces. Fear not, here are some great tips on how to maintain a somewhat neat and tidy home, without the added domestic help.

organized1. Leave some motivational notes. Sometimes, it’s not that you don’t want to do an errand or chore, it could be you just forgot. Leaving notes written on neon-coloured Post-Its around the house on what to do, what’s needed for the house and so on, does wonders. It immediately gets your attention and seeing it in writing gives it some urgency so you’re less likely to procrastinate.

2. Pick the right cleaning time. Everyone has 24 hours a day, and just like you, several have a busy lifestyle. Yet they manage to keep a clean place. If you know you’re not the kind of person who can come home and do chores after work, try tidying up a bit in the mornings. Make the bed the minute you’re up, even if it’s just arranging the pillows and setting the spread right, not the whole nine yards with tucked corners and fluffy pillows. It’s still neater than a slept in bed. Pick up after yourself and don’t leave clothes lying about as you get dressed for work. It takes about 2 minutes max to put clothes back into the wardrobe or the laundry basket.

3. Plan and have a schedule. You don’t have to do everything every day. Draw up a plan. For example – you can focus on a different room each day, instead of clearing the whole house 7 days a week. Or you could do a different chore each day such as dusting on Mondays, sweeping on Tuesdays and so forth. Dividing things up into a more manageable workload makes it less daunting and tiring. You’ll also find that once you get started, you’ll develop a rhythm and soon, cleaning up will be a breeze and less of a bane.

organised makeup4. Have a place for everything. As with everything, a good foundation really helps. Get organized from the start and you’ll save yourself a lot of trouble. Have a proper laundry basket instead of throwing clothes on the floor or straight into the washer. A magazine rack helps keep the coffee table clear of magazines and newspapers. Keep your dresser clear by having specific containers for make-up lotions and other items. If you can’t live completely mess free, at least live in an “organized” mess, so you know where to look for stuff. You’ll notice the difference if you ever have that unexpected guest turn up at your doorstep.

5. Make it a group effort. Unless you’re single, you should have a partner or kids that can help with the work of keeping a clean house. Give everyone a simple duty that they have to perform and remember – many hands make light of heavy work.
