Time to get moving Garfield! Obesity is becoming a real problem for pets around the world.  According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (yes, this is for real), out of the 77.5 million dogs in the USA, an astonishing 35 million are considered overweight and 6.7 million are clinically obese.

The main causes of obesity amongst pets are over indulgence and lack of physical activities.

If you love your pet, then you should not spoil him or her. Keep in mind that getting your

pet disciplined is a sign of affection and love as well. If you continue to feed your pet in excessive amounts, then you could lose him or her at a young age. In addition, an obese or overweight pet may develop medical conditions such as heart complications, respiratory problems, arthritis and hypertension.

How bad can having a pet who’s a little fat be? Well, according to the Purina Lifespan Study that was conducted by Nestle Purina PetCare, being overweight could take as much as 2 years off your pet’s life.

For some pet owners, they may not realize that their pet is overweight until the veterinarian informs them. How do you know if your pet is obese or overweight? First, you must be able to feel your pets’ ribs with and without pressure. If you cannot count your furry friend’s ribs with applied pressure, then your pet has excess layers of fats on his or her rib cage.

Tips to avoid pet obesity

If you want your pet to live longer, then follow these simple guidelines:

  • Frequent checkups with the vet. Frequent checkups from the vet will certainly increase your pet’s lifespan. With the help of your vet, you will be able to identify the right nutrition and diet plan for your beloved pet.
  • Exercise your pet. Like humans, pets need regular exercise to reduce the risks of developing obesity. To keep your pet active and healthy, always find time to play and exercise your pet. You should let him or her engage in activities such as running and hiking. Regular exercise not only shreds your pet’s extra pounds, but it will keep him or her energetic as well.
  • Balanced and healthy diet. Feed your pet with a healthy and balanced diet. Your pet’s diet should be high in fiber and low in fat contents. That means no feeding off the dinner table!
  • Periodic weight watch. Your pet’s weight must be checked every month.
  • Feeding schedule. If you want to have a healthy pet, then you should have definite feeding schedule. Your pet should consume the recommended quantities of food for three times a day only.
