Paw Play – Introducing a New Kitten to an Old Cat
Pets — By 88DB Knowledge on July 20, 2012 4:11 pmAnimal lovers can’t help themselves sometimes and can’t stop at one pet. But some animals, particularly cats, don’t play well with others. If you were unable to walk past a cute, furry kitten face and ended up bringing it to a home with an existing top cat, here are some survival tips for everybody’s sake:

- Allow both cats to get used to each other: When you bring the new cat home, don’t introduce it straight away to the other furry family member. It is recommended to put the new cat in its own room and over the next few days, allow both of them to get used to each other through smells under the door.
- Ease into visual introductions: It typically takes an average of one week for them to get used to each other’s scent. If there are no outwardly aggressive behaviours displayed, then visual introductions can be made. Supervision is still required at this tender stage. If the resident cat starts being aggressive, revert to step one again before trying to familiarise them in person again.
- No visitors policy: Yes, you want to show off your adorable, furry munchkin to your friends. But as introducing a new pet into the household is quite a major experience, refrain from having visitors over, even if your first cat is friendly with people. Animals are more sensitive than people and do not need extra stressors during this phase.
Situations differ, so getting your cats used to each other can go from anytime between 10 days up to a month. Treats for good behaviour always help. Once your pets accept each other, get ready for the antics that they can get up together.
