Student Work Experience Counts
Jobs — By 88DB Knowledge on April 26, 2011 10:30 amJoanne Chua is a final year student at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. She’s studying for a Diploma in Business Studies, specializing in Entrepreneurship. JobsDB Campus chatted with Joanne to learn her thoughts on why it’s important to gain student work experience.

Joanne, what inspired you to study for a Diploma in Business Studies?
Simply put, it has helped to give me a wider perspective of the business world.
For example, I get to learn about interesting subjects such as basic law, international economics, IT, financial management, all of which I believe will be useful for me in the future when I enter the working world.
Have you worked part-time?
Yes, I worked in customer service at the JobsDB.com Career Expo 2008. It was a good experience for me as I learnt useful skills such as effective communication, problem solving and also how to co-ordinate such a big event whereby more than 50 000 people attended!
Therefore, I would definitely encourage students to get some part-time or holiday work experience as well. Working as a student will not guarantee a high pay, however it is the experience that matters.
Also, I take it as opportunities for myself to experience different working environments and at the same time, try to identify my interest in different areas.

What career advice do you have for students?
Instead of job hopping in the future, make full use of your liberty as a student to gain as much exposure by trying out different part-time jobs during the holidays!
JobsDB Campus wishes Joanne All The Best!
