The Art of Nails

Consider nails, accessories in today’s fashion world. If you are dressed to the nines but sporting chipped and uneven nails, your image is in for a whole lot of damage.

These days, with professionals taking good care of our nails, we seem to find no reason to learn the art of beautifying our own nails. Why not learn how it’s done anyways and save some dollars while at it. All you will need is the right set of tools and touch of creativity.

Steps

  • Start with some nail polish remover and cotton balls to rid your nails off any unsightly, stubborn speckles of nail polish.
  • As it is always better to work with a decent length, use a nail clipper to chop off the unnecessary bits.
  • Uneven ends of your nails can be shaped to round or square (depending on which works better for you) with the help of a nail file.
  • Liquid soaps and moisturizers are great with softening nails and cuticles.
  • Use a cuticle stick to push back cuticles or if you have the confidence, a cutter to carefully cut them out.
  • Before and after you apply nail polish onto your nails, slather on base and top coats – the former to protect the original condition of your nails and remove risks of staining from nail polish and the latter to preserve the lifespan of your nail colour, for longer.
  • For an extra touch of glamour, use coloured stones, acrylic paints and even Swarovski crystals to create your own nail art designs.

In 2011, Manicure and Pedicure trends are all set to follow the route of the ‘BOLD Express’. Shorter nails are in these days while reds and browns are the colours of the season. Sure, reds and browns are not for everybody. But, would taking time and a little extra effort to find the shade that suits you best hurt? And yes, Fashion says bright reds and dark browns are certainly appropriate for work this year. Find colours that have glitter or sparkly bits in them that will enhance the shine on your nails.

Nail Arts are a whole lot more edgy now as well. Even though the classic flowery designs and crystals are still available, newly introduced designs are all set to blow your mind. Expect to see more crushed, cracked, shattered, polka dotted and animal printed nails this year, ladies. Popular brands like OPI have released their own ranges of nail polish which when applied over a solid nail colour exude a crushed or cracked look. “Cracked concrete”, “Shattered”, “Fault Line” and “Crushed Candy” are some examples from the new collections. Polka dotted nails can be easily achieved through Sally Hansen’s Nail Art Pen, which functions like a marker. The ink is removable, if you make a mistake. Once you are done, simply apply a layer of top coat, to seal in your art work for a good long time. As for animal print designs, I would strongly suggest that you leave it to the professionals.

So, don’t be shy now. Let your inner temptress shine all year long!
