What does it take to be a designer?
It requires a creative aptitude, a point of view, technical knowledge and an inquisitive mind. All of this wrapped up in a package of unbridled passion.
To be a designer, you can’t be a temperamental artiste.
You need a collaborative spirit and a healthy respect for the client. (Even if you might not agree with their opinions.)
Why be a designer?
Designers usually choose to be designers because they enjoy creating what they visualize in their mind.
A love for colors and art also play a part in the career choice.
You have to love challenges.
Being a designer isn’t all about letting it flow.
There will be times you’ll be stuck with a drought of inspiration and no ideas.
This is when you have to really get creative.
Whether it’s surfing the net for references or getting the opinions of others, you’ll have to work through it.
What’s not cool about being a designer?
Unreasonable clients, repetitive redesigns, rejected works.
The list is endless.
Like any other creative job, being a designer means having to deal with rejection.
The piece of work you might have spent days on can just as easily be rejected by someone with absolutely no training.
Deal with it.
Be professional. Relate to your clients and try to understand the reason they’re unhappy with your work.
Ask questions about the colors and take a look at things from their perspective.
It might just take a simple change in color to change their minds.

There’s a great sense of accomplishment when it’s your work that goes on a billboard seen by thousands.
